more than surfing

A path to confidence, connection and community.

For our athletes, the wave is just the beginning. What grows on the water carries all the way back to shore and stays for life: trust, courage, belonging.

Confidence

Every wave caught is a real win an athlete can feel, own, and be proud of.

Independence

New skills in the water ripple outward into communication, choices, and trying new things.

Community

Athletes, families, volunteers, and instructors: one ohana, sharing the stoke together.

the flow state

Why surfing is so powerful for neurodiverse people.

Riding a wave means harnessing the ocean's energy and, for a moment, becoming completely one with its movement. Total focus. Instinctual confidence. Unfiltered joy, grounded in the present.

That's flow, and the residue lasts a lifetime. Our team is trained for sensory sensitivities and communication styles, so the water always feels safe enough to find it.

Why we started Flow.

Flow Surf Academy began with a simple belief: the ocean can change a life. We exist to put neurodiverse kids and adults on a wave, and to surround them with a community that believes in them.

Our mission

To make the joy, confidence, and freedom of surfing accessible to neurodiverse people, and to build an ohana where every athlete is met with patience, respect, and zero pressure.

How it began

Flow began with one wave and one belief: every child deserves to hear yes. From those first breakthroughs in the ocean grew a legacy of surf therapy, community, and possibility, one that continues today through Flow Surf Academy.

What we believe

We believe ability outshines limitation, that families deserve support as much as athletes do, and that a single morning in the ocean can ripple outward for a lifetime.

A note from our founder

We believe in abilities. Surfing is just the conduit that brings them to the surface.

Pat Notaro III, Founder of Flow Surf Academy

The people behind Flow.

Nothing we do happens alone. Families, local businesses, and partners make it possible to put neurodiverse and disabled athletes on a wave, and to keep every Ohana day free. Each name here is a vote of belief in ability, in community, and in the power of the ocean to change lives.

Montauk started with one family who wanted Flow closer to home. If your town is ready for free, inclusive surf days, we will help you build a chapter from the sand up.

Sponsor a season

Your support covers boards, wetsuits, trained staff, and safe beach days, and keeps every program free for the athletes and families who need it.

Ohana Surf Days

Free community surf days where neurodiverse and adaptive athletes and their families share first waves, sunshine, and the whole-ohana stoke. No experience needed, and every comfort level is welcome.

FreeAll welcomeFamily friendly

What it is

Flow Ohana Days bring families together for a meaningful day at the beach, where athletes are encouraged to try something new, build confidence, and experience the ocean in a safe and supportive way.

Trained volunteers guide each surfer into the water at their own pace, helping them feel comfortable, capable, and celebrated.

While the surfers ride waves, families connect on the sand, cheer each other on, and become part of the Flow Ohana.

Who it is for

Built specifically for neurodiverse kids, adults, and adaptive athletes of all abilities.

Whether it’s their first time in the ocean or they’re returning as part of the Flow Ohana, every surfer is welcomed, supported, and encouraged at their own pace.

What to expect

Wetsuits and boards are provided, and each athlete receives one-to-one support from trained volunteers and instructors focused on safety, comfort, and encouragement. Every surfer is given the time they need to warm up to the ocean before catching waves at their own pace.

We surf together, break for a healthy lunch, then head back into the water for more surfing.

At the end of the day, we gather for an award ceremony to celebrate everyone’s accomplishments, courage, and special moments from the day.

Volunteer Opportunities

There are two ways to give your time at Flow: lend a hand at an Ohana day, or volunteer through your workplace so your hours turn into a company donation.

Individuals welcomeTeams welcomeVolunteer grants

Volunteer at an Ohana day

Join us on the sand and in the water. Volunteers help athletes catch waves, set up the beach, welcome families at check-in, and cheer everyone on. No surf experience needed, we will train you.

Workplace volunteering

Bring your company crew for a day of giving back. Employees log real volunteer hours, and many employers donate or match a set amount for that time through volunteer grant programs. Your team has a blast and helps fund free surf days.

How to start

Tell us whether you are coming on your own or with a workplace team, plus a few dates that work, and we will get you set up with everything you need.

Montauk: built on connection, aligned in purpose.

Montauk Flow brings the transformative power of the ocean to athletes with neurodivergent abilities. Based at Ditch Plains, our program creates a safe, uplifting space where athletes learn to surf and swim in the ocean while building confidence, independence, and meaningful connection.

Ditch Plains, NYFree for familiesYear-round

The near-peer model

What sets Montauk apart is its near-peer model: students and young adults mentor athletes side by side, building relatability, leadership, and a strong sense of community both in and out of the water. The shared experience creates lasting bonds and helps athletes feel supported, understood, and empowered.

All year on the water

Beyond surfing, the program runs year-round. Winter swimming sessions develop foundational surf skills, while summer sailing expands each athlete's connection to the ocean and their sense of independence on the water.

What grows here

Through surfing and these ocean-based experiences, we see growth in emotional well-being, physical health, and social connection. Fear turns into excitement and hesitation into confidence. Athletes gain independence, families find a network, and volunteers grow into compassionate leaders.

A note from our East Coast Director

This new path with Flow West Coast feels right. What they've built and what we've developed over the years, it's all lining up to take things to new heights.

Bob Miller, East Coast Director, Flow Surf Academy
